Typical SMB Scope: In a small-to-medium business (10400 employees), a mid-level QA Test Engineer often wears multiple hats across the testing process. They may be the primary tester on projects, handling everything from requirements review to test execution and reporting. The scope typically includes both manual testing and maintaining some automated tests for critical workflows, given that SMB teams often have limited specialized roles. The engineer works closely with cross-functional team members (developers, product managers, sometimes client support) to understand features and reproduce issues. They must be comfortable in a hybrid work setting, coordinating testing activities both on-site and remotely using online tools. In an SMB environment, they also contribute to improving testing processes (e.g. introducing a test case management tool or refining bug tracking practices) and ensure that test documentation is lightweight yet effective for fast-paced development cycles.

Collaborate with development and product teams: Work closely with developers to clarify requirements and acceptance criteria before testing begins, ensuring testability of designs. Participate in code reviews or design discussions to provide a QA perspective. When bugs are disputed or unclear, facilitate a constructive discussion with developers by providing evidence (steps to reproduce, logs) and understanding their point of view to reach a resolution.

Maintain test environments and data: Set up and manage test environments (or staging environments) that mirror production configurations as closely as possible. These tasks are designed to assess a candidates attention to detail and ability to spot errors or inconsistencies. Each has a deterministic correct outcome:

Task 6.1: Test Result Consistency Check You are given a small test results table for a calculation feature and asked to spot any errors in the reported outcomes:

Prompt: Identify the discrepancy in the table above. (The candidate should examine expected vs. actual results and the status.) The correct observation is that Test Case TC3 is marked Pass despite the Actual Output (4) not matching the Expected Output (3). This indicates an error in the reporting either the status should be Fail or the expected result is wrong. A detail-oriented candidate will spot that mismatch immediately.

Task 6.2: Logical Order of Steps You are provided with a test case outline for a login scenario, but the steps might not be in the correct logical order:

Step 1: Navigate to the login page. Step 2: Click "Login" button. Step 3: Enter username and password. Step 4: Verify that the dashboard page is displayed.

Prompt: Identify the mistake in the sequence of test steps above. The correct answer is that Step 2 and Step 3 are in the wrong order you would need to enter the username and password before clicking the Login button. An attentive candidate should recognize that attempting to click "Login" without entering credentials is out of sequence (unless the intent was to test form validation for empty input, which is not indicated here). The expected fix is swapping the order: Enter credentials, then click "Login".

Task 6.3: Bug Report Accuracy Review You are given a bug report summary and asked to find at least one issue with it. For example:

A candidate with good attention to detail and understanding of impact will flag the severity misclassification. (Other acceptable answers might be noting if any step is unclear, but in this case severity stands out as clearly wrong.) The expected answer is to point out that an inability to login is a critical problem, not minor, indicating the report is inaccurately labeled.

Each of these tasks has a definitive correct identification, making it easy to objectively score whether the candidate noticed the issue or not.


To evaluate written communication skills, especially in a professional QA context, candidates can be given prompts that require drafting a brief written response. These tasks mirror real workplace scenarios where clear, audience-appropriate communication is essential:

Prompt 7.1: Bug Explanation Email (Developer Communication) Scenario: You found a complex bug in the application that a developer is having trouble reproducing. Draft an email to the developer explaining the issue. Include the key details: a summary of the bug, the exact steps you followed to reproduce it, what you expected to happen versus what actually happened, and any relevant evidence (such as screenshots or log snippets). The tone should be collaborative, not blaming, and aim to help the developer see and understand the problem. (The scoring will focus on clarity, completeness of reproduction steps, and a professional tone.)

Prompt 7.2: Testing Status Update (Stakeholder Communication) Scenario: Its halfway through the testing cycle for a release, and a product manager has asked for an update. Write a concise Slack message or email summarizing the testing status. Include how many test cases have been executed and passed, how many defects have been found (and if any are critical blockers), and whether the project is on track for the scheduled release. The update should be understandable to non-engineers, highlighting any risks or outstanding needs (e.g., Waiting on a new build to re-test a critical fix).

Prompt 7.3: Defect Ticket Writing (Technical Clarity) Scenario: You need to log a new bug in Jira. Write the Title and Steps to Reproduce fields for a bug where, for example, the system allows a user to reset their password with an invalid email link. Make sure the title is clear and concise (e.g., "Password reset accepts expired link") and the reproduction steps are detailed enough that anyone could follow them to see the issue. Assume the description will also include expected vs. actual results. (This task assesses the ability to communicate technical details clearly in a structured format.)

Prompt 7.4: Requirement Clarification Request (Cross-team Communication) Scenario: While writing test cases, you encounter an unclear requirement: "The system should handle invalid inputs gracefully." Youre not sure what "gracefully" means in this context. Draft a message to the product owner or business analyst asking for clarification. Your message should politely state what part of the requirement is ambiguous and request specific examples or acceptance criteria (e.g., "Could you clarify how the system should respond when an invalid input is entered For instance, should it show an error message to the user, and if so, what should it say"). This evaluates the candidates ability to seek clarity and communicate uncertainties constructively.

Each prompt expects the candidate to produce a short written piece. Scoring will look at how well they conveyed the necessary information, the tone (professional and courteous), and whether the content is organized and understandable. These communications should be easily scored by checking if key points were included and if the style is appropriate for the scenario.


Tasks

These simulation tasks assess the candidates practical QA knowledge and how they apply testing principles. Each task includes a scenario requiring a concrete response, with clear criteria for evaluation:

Task 8.1: Boundary Value Test Design Scenario: An e-commerce website offers free shipping for orders over $50. If the order total is $50 or less, shipping is applied; if its $50.01 or more, shipping is free (i.e., any amount greater than $50 qualifies for free shipping). Prompt: Identify at least three test scenarios to verify the free shipping feature, covering boundary values. Expected Answer (Key Points): The candidate should list test cases that include the boundary conditions around $50. For example: (a) an order of $49.99 (just below the threshold, expect shipping fee applied), (b) an order of $50.00 (on the boundary according to the rule, this does not qualify since its not over $50, so expect shipping fee applied), and (c) an order of $50.01 (just above the threshold, expect free shipping). Additional relevant cases could be $0 (trivial case, shipping likely applied if any order <=$50) or a very large order (to ensure the rule consistently gives free shipping). Scoring: 1 point for each key scenario identified (especially the just-below, at-boundary, and just-above cases). Full credit if all boundary scenarios are covered and correctly expected outcomes stated.

Task 8.2: Input Constraint Testing Scenario: A web application has a profile picture upload feature with the following requirements: it only accepts files of type JPEG (extension.jpg) and the file size must be 5 MB or less. Prompt: Describe the test cases you would execute to validate this upload feature covers both file type and file size constraints. Expected Answer (Key Points): The candidate should enumerate test cases that cover both valid and invalid combinations: for example, (a) Valid case: Upload a correct JPEG file under 5 MB (expect success), (b) Wrong file type: Upload a PNG or PDF file of a small size (expect rejection with an error like unsupported file type), (c) Exceed size: Upload a large.jpg file (e.g., 6 MB) (expect rejection with an error like file too large), (d) Edge size: Upload a.jpg exactly 5 MB (if the requirement says 5 MB or less, this should be accepted expect success; if "5 MB" is the max, clarify acceptance), (e) Possibly no file or corrupt file: Try to upload nothing or a 0-byte file (expect a graceful error). Scoring: The answer should include at least one valid case and at least one case for each type of invalid condition (wrong type, too large). Each relevant test case scenario earns points. Full credit if the candidate covers type and size dimensions thoroughly and notes expected outcomes for each.

Task 8.3: Login Function Testing Scenario: Assume a simple user login function that requires a username and password, and differentiates between correct and incorrect credentials. Prompt: List three important test cases you would execute for the login functionality (beyond just the basic happy path). Expected Answer (Key Points): The candidates tests should demonstrate understanding of positive vs. negative scenarios: (a) Valid credentials: Input a correct username/password combination (expect successful login). (b) Invalid password: Use a valid username but an incorrect password (expect login failure message like invalid credentials). (c) Invalid username: Use a username that doesnt exist (with any password) (expect login failure, same invalid credentials message or appropriate error). Additionally, a good answer might include (d) Empty fields: attempt login with one or both fields blank (expect validation error prompting for required fields, no attempt to authenticate). Other possible cases: password case sensitivity check if applicable, SQL injection attempt (security negative case), or account lockout after multiple failures (if requirements hint at it).

Scoring: Each essential test case is a point. The must-have cases are valid login and at least one invalid login scenario. An excellent answer will mention the empty input case as well. The emphasis is on covering normal and error conditions; if the candidate only mentions the happy path, thats a red flag. Full credit for covering both success and failure paths (and partial for two out of three, etc., if one important scenario is missing).

Each of these technical tasks has clear criteria. The answer key enumerates what a strong answer should contain, allowing deterministic scoring (e.g., did they identify the exact boundary cases Did they include both type and size checks Did they cover both valid and invalid login cases). This ensures the assessment objectively measures practical QA skills in test design and analysis.

Good for additional insight, but partial credit allowed its weighted lower than pure skills. -Cognitive: ~5% of total. A basic filter; not heavily weighted unless extremely poor. -Soft Skills (in test): ~5% of total. Also a minor portion in the test since deeper soft skills will be evaluated in interview. -Structured Interview (50% of total score): -Behavioral questions (teamwork, problem-solving): ~20% of total. Did they demonstrate key behaviors with examples Technical deep-dive questions: ~15% of total. Assesses hands-on experience and depth of knowledge. Situational (prioritization question): ~5% of total. Looks at judgment in a hypothetical context. -Attitude question: ~10% of total. This is important for cultural fit (learning mindset, ownership).

(These percentages are guidelines; actual scoring can use a points system mapped to these weights. For instance, convert the online assessment 14-point score to 50 and interview questions to another 50 points.)

Pass/Fail Guidance for Must-Haves: -Regardless of numeric score, certain must-have criteria are pass/fail gates. For example: -Attention to Detail: If the candidate fails to identify obvious errors in the accuracy tasks (section 6 and corresponding assessment questions), thats a fail. QA requires meticulous detail orientation; a miss here outweighs other strengths. Even if their overall score is high, missing simple inconsistencies suggests they may let critical bugs slip. Thus, set a rule: At least 1 of 2 accuracy questions must be correct (preferably 2/2) to move forward. 0/2 in Accuracy = automatic disqualification. -Fundamental QA Knowledge: The Hard Skills section has key practical questions (test cases and logic bug). If a candidate scores very low here (e.g. less than 50% in Hard Skills portion), it indicates they lack basic testing skills. That should be a fail, as these are core to the job. We dont require mastery of every tool listed, but as a pass criterion, a candidate should at least have experience in some bug tracking system and some testing automation exposure. Defensive or blame-oriented attitude: An inability to accept constructive feedback or a tendency to blame others (e.g., Developers always mess up, I just file bugs or getting defensive if a mistake of theirs is pointed out). QA roles require collaboration and a problem-solving attitude. Red flags include speaking negatively about past teammates, showing frustration or anger when discussing conflict, or an unwillingness to admit past errors.

Poor communication skills: If the candidates written communication in the assessment is unclear, disorganized, or overly verbose/too sparse, that's concerning. For instance, bug descriptions that are missing key details, or an email prompt response that is confusing or filled with jargon for a nontechnical audience. Similarly, in conversation, if they cannot convey their thoughts coherently or answer questions directly, its a disqualifier given the communication-heavy nature of QA work.

Ignorance of tools and automation (for mid-level): A mid-level QA who claims to only do manual testing and shows no interest or exposure to automation or relevant tools can be a red flag in many SMB contexts. For example, if theyve never used a bug tracker or dont know what Selenium is, it might indicate they are not up-to-date or their experience is very limited. (There may be some niche cases, but generally at 35 years one expects basic tool proficiency.)

Fails the attention/accuracy test items: Specifically for this role, if the candidate fails most of the deterministic attention-to-detail tasks (section 6) or doesnt catch glaring issues, its an automatic disqualifier. QA engineers must demonstrate they catch what others might miss.

Inability to prioritize or handle pressure in scenarios: If in situational questions (or in their past descriptions) they respond in a way that indicates panic, poor prioritization, or willingness to cut corners on quality under pressure, thats a concern. For example, a candidate who says I would just sign-off even if not fully tested to keep the deadline (without any risk management) or someone who in multiple scenarios chooses to ignore the issue or not communicate it those are red flag choices showing poor judgment.

Negative attitude towards learning or teamwork: Statements like Thats not my job when discussing cross-functional issues, or an expressed reluctance to learn new skills (I only test in this one way and I dont intend to learn others) are red flags. 10. Assessment Blueprint (30 minutes total)

The 30-minute skills assessment is divided into five sections, each targeting a different competency area. All questions are designed for deterministic grading. Below is the blueprint with example questions and answer keys/scoring notes:

This section tests general reasoning and problem-solving ability with 3 quick questions.
